Our local
Montgomery County historical society was beloved by my parents, they were among the founding members and a number of their antiques were donated to the society.
The restoration of a local house and Revolutionary Headquarters of George Washington was something they worked hard to achieve but unfortunately both died before it came to fruition.
The Henry Antes House was built in 1730 and remained in almost
original condition until the time it was purchased by the society.
The Antes house is only about 3 miles from our original family homestead which actually predates the Antes house.
Anyway--I got the bug from my parents and am also active in the society.
We were just honored by a famous guest, Andrew Zimmern , star of Bizarre Foods shown on the Travel Channel. Mr Zimmern enjoyed some of our "traditional" dishes including pigs feet, stuffed pigs stomach, eel and ground berry pie. These traditional dishes were prepared for Mr Zimmern in the big walk-in fireplace in the kuche (kitchen) by members of the society.
Nothing in that seems bizarre to me---but I guess it is all based on your perspective. The show will not air until sometime in October.
Henry Antes was a master builder who became active with the Moravians, a sect which had some involvement with Madame Montor. He was responsible for the construction of extensive church buildings in Bethlehem, most of which remain in use today, some by
Moravian College.
About 30 years ago in a different life I did the restoration of the Grist Mill in Bethlehem built in 1743 and the
Sun Inn which was Antes last building in Bethlehem. Antes who never converted to the Moravian faith was their business manager for many years before having a falling out and returning to his home in Montgomery county. Latter he did go to NC and took a new project on there for the Moravians.
